of his family to come from Valdres to Decorah, IA. His trip from Oslo to N.Y took two weeks. He arrived in Decorah Sep. 1902.

Kristi J. Viken born 18 Nov 1880 (Christine Andersson) came on the ship Thingvalla-linien in 1898 at age 16. She took a train to Grafton, ND to her uncle’s home who was a pharmacist. She went to school in Park River for 3 years until 1901. In 1903 she went to Minneapolis where she worked as a seamstress for $3.00 a week.

Ole L. Hamre and Christine Anderssen

Ole and Christine were married at the home of Nils and Marit Hamre Qualley in Decorah. Ole was naturalized 21 Sep 1909 in Decorah. He was a painter and traveled selling paints, oil, varnish and wallpaper. He was also a decorator and paperhanger. Ole was in the hospital with influenza and was “lonesome for Ma and the kids” and in his delirium he walked home in just his hospital gown. He died 12 Nov 1918 just 2 weeks after his brother Lars died and 3 months after his brother Eivind was killed in France.

Olav lived with the family until 1918 and Knut lived with them in the 1920’s. Ole's and Christine’s children are: Margaret Beatrice (b.16 May 1912- d. 19 Jan 1986). (See separate article). Lauritz J. (b. 3 Oct 1910 - d. 26 Aug 1968). (See separate article).

Christine sold their home at 308 Terrace when Margaret went to Chicago for nurses training. Christine then lived in the back apartment of the house at 301 Broadway & Day St. She had a loom and wove rugs. Her granddaughter, Karen, has it now.

Christine lived with her daughter Margaret in Illinois for many years. She died 12 Jan 1961 in a nursing home in Sparta, IL. She was buried next to Ole in the Decorah Lutheran Cemetery.

Hanley, Eugene and Margaret Jean “Marjean” (Vick)

Eugene Hanley was born 5 Feb 1912. He worked for his folks in the laundry/dry-cleaning business.

Eugene attended the University of Hawaii (Japanese Language) while a Marine in WWII. He participated in the Battle of Okinawa and subsequently in Japanese troop repatriation in China. He also attended the University of MN.

Eugene married Margaret J. Vick. She worked at Walker Art Center and in art supply sales at H .A. Rogers Co. and for Dayton’s Department Store in Minneapolis, MN. The Hanleys have 7 children: Michael, Patrick, Monica, Timothy, Stephen, Marcia and Robert.

Michael  married Alice Norgaard. He broke the MN State Mile Track record while a student at Anoka, High School. He graduated from the University of MN with a BS Degree and served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a helicopter pilot. Michael is presently a sportswear sales representative in the upper midwest for his brother’s distributing business. Alice is a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College. She worked for Lutheran Brotherhood as a training materials specialist and is now an “at home Mom" plus a consultant for Lutheran Brotherhood. They have one child: Eric.

Patrick Brian married Yvonne Stenerson (b. 6 Apr 1950). Yvonne graduated from the University of MN, Valedictorian of her Dental Class. She practices in Fergus Falls, MN. Pat graduated from the University of MN and owns a sportswear distributing warehouse for the Atlanta based Hartwell Industry's jackets and sportswear in Fergus Falls. They have no children.

Marjean (Vick) Hanley

Monica Javne graduated from the business college and worked for several years for the Litton Co. She is a Telecommunications Analyst for MTS Systems Corp. in Eden Prairie, MN.
